Does any of this sound familiar?
- "I want to wear interesting clothes that make me stand out, but my wardrobe is boring."
- "I want to find high-quality, fashionable clothes at a reasonable price, but I feel like that doesn't exist anymore."
- "I'd like to know the clothes I buy aren't being made in a sweatshop."
If so, you've come to the right place.
At Antigua Threads, we provide the highest quality belts and leather goods on the market while empowering local Guatemalan artisans to help keep their craft alive.
Belts should be more fun than your everyday, boring, plain brown or black belt. Belts should have character, design, and color. An interesting belt stands out and catches the eye.
- Having strangers stop you in public to ask you where you got your belt
- Having an heirloom piece that will last a lifetime, you can be excited to wear every day in any setting
- Knowing that you invest in clothing that helps empower people through social capitalism
The idea for Antigua Threads seemed obvious when we first found the beautiful designs and patterns sold on the streets of Antigua, Guatemala. They had a vibrant yet vintage and relaxed feel to them.
We bought them to wear and brought them home to the States as gifts for friends and family. People loved them. They were different than any other belts you could find in the US. And they had a cool story.
Our belts are woven by Mayan women using a traditional, 3,000-year-old technique on a foot loom - an incredibly simple wooden machine. Watching these women weave the beautiful patterns you see in our products is mesmerizing and incredibly meditative. You can see some of the process in our brand video linked at the bottom of the page.
The weavers were all taught this craft from their mothers and grandmothers, spanning generations. Unfortunately, it is an ancient traditional craft that is dying out in the younger generations. Younger women, even of Mayan descent, are less interested in weaving fabric on a wooden machine when the world is moving so fast around them.
That is why a big part of our mission is to help keep this tradition alive by purchasing looms, expanding our weaving output, and giving these women more business to earn an excellent living for themselves and their families. Not to mention showing the world the beautiful art from Guatemala, the heart of the Mayan world.
We want to help you look good, from our handwoven belts to our leather totes. When you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you are more confident, and good things happen to you in your career, your relationships, and every other area in your life.
