Voting with Your Wallet: The Most Impactful Way to Create Change

As we cast our ballots on this Election Day, many of us are feeling anxious about the future. The presidential election often brings to the forefront the tribalism that exists in our society, as we become increasingly entrenched in our red vs blue ideologies. When our preferred candidate loses, we often lose hope for the near-term progress of the United States.

The good news…we still have the power to create change every day by voting with our wallets.

It should come as no surprise that Americans spend far more money on consumer goods ($41,511!)  than any other country in the world. Simply put, our spending habits have more influence than any other mechanism to promote socially responsible groups, businesses, and communities that drive us towards a more equitable future.

So, what does it mean to "vote with your wallet"? It means making conscious purchasing decisions that reflect your values.

If you care about animal welfare, you may want to prioritize cruelty-free cosmetics. If you care about public health, you may want to buy food from companies that emphasize nutrition and avoid artificial preservatives. If you care about access to education, you may choose to buy products from companies that offer educational resources to underprivileged communities.

The list is seemingly endless. The point here is that ultimately, as citizens, we hold the power to shape our world through our daily choices, extending far beyond the impact of our votes on election day.
